My Website WPJA

Greetings all and welcome to my world. My name is Bruce Mayhill and I am the owner, lead photographer, and head dishwasher of Mayhill Photo. Here you will be able to get a chance to see photos from recent weddings and portrait sessions as well as see what sort of ridiculous things I am up to in my personal life.

I recently moved to Concord, NC (just outside of Charlotte) from Los Angeles, CA. My lungs are still getting used to the fresh air while my wife is still getting used to the possibility of snow! I am primarily a wedding photographer and my recipe for great wedding photography is a carefully crafted formula consisting of the following: a documentary approach, a touch of traditionalism (so as to appease Grandma!), and fashion shoot attitude. This is all touched off with a mild-spicy dash of insanity. Fasten your seatbelt, this is not going to be a boring ride!

A very touching email

Every once in while, I get an email or a letter that really helps me to remember why it is that I love this job.

Here is an email from a recent bride...

Bruce,

First of all, I have no words for what those pictures did for us. You captured my wedding day so I'll never forget the magic that happened. One picture stood out far beyond the rest. Quite a few years ago Eddie's Dad was very sick and dying. He had called for all the family to be there by his hospital bed, almost to say his last goodbyes. Eddie got the call from his brother at work that dad was asking for him. Eddie, then living in Durham, NC left work on his way to Roanoke, VA to be with his dad. Several times from Durham to Roanoke Eddie got the call asking "where are you, Dad's asking for you". Just a few miles from the hospital in Roanoke, a cop pulled out behind Eddie. He thought about speeding to get there faster but didn't want to risk getting a ticket and waisting more time, so he did the speed limit all the way there. By the time he reached the room Eddie(senior) had already passed. It was very hard for him, knowing that his dad was asking for him and he just missed him. He never felt like he had a proper goodbye.

Several days later when he returned home to Durham and to work he had a very bothersome visitor. Every time he went out to smoke, a little yellow butterfly outlined in black would land on the trash can next to where he stood. Several times he shooed him away but to no avail, he always flew right back to the trash can. This determined butterfly did this for weeks, it didn't matter what time of day it was or how many times he went out or what the weather brought, he was there. Finally Eddie quit trying to get rid of the butterfly when he realized that every time he showed up was when he had thoughts of his dad or the fact that he didn't make it in time. Maybe this was dad saying it was okay that you didn't make it and I'll be right here by your side.

So Bruce, yellow butterflies are something very special to us because they always show up at just the right time. We always giggle because we know it's just Eddie (senior) telling us that it's okay I'll be right here with you.

While looking through my wedding pictures I clicked on one that gave me goose bumps. I instantly called Eddie and said "guess who was at the wedding?" Of course he had no clue, so I told him amongst all the pictures you took I came across a picture of a bed of flowers that that just seemed random until I realized a little yellow butterfly outlined in black right in the middle.

So, long story short, thanks for letting us know that Eddie (senior) was there to share our day with us!

We love you!
Keturah and Eddie Callaway

It is my pleasure to provide photographs like this.

Good to be home...

As much as I enjoy traveling, it is always nice to come home. I got in last night and crashed. I did have a great time in Austria and the wedding was great. I will post some photos this afternoon since I didn't post any while I was gone. Perhaps when I go to Jamaica next month I will take a card reader that fits an SD card!

Keep an eye open for a few photos soon!

Ahhh...Vienna

What an absolutely gorgeous city! I arrived today and was picked up by a friend that I made at WPPI 2008. He lives here and very graciously invited me to stay at his place during my week here.

Today, we went out to lunch in a lovely garden where I had some schnitzel with potato salad and a beer, of course. Then, he took me to hotel that over looks the city where we had dessert and coffee. Holy crap that was good.

We got back from dinner and some general socializing with some of his friends a little while ago and that was a great time as well.

I have been her 13 hours and I am quite sure that I have gained 10 pounds!

I will add some photos tomorrow but for now I am going to bed.

The Mighty Miss!

I have been in Iowa for the last few days shooting a wedding with a
buddy of mine. We had a great time and since we are in my hometown, I
got to hang out with some old friends as well!

Here is a photo from the bridge over the Mississipi River.

24 Hours...

Until I take off for Chicago.

Don't be jealous but tomorrow, I will be eating Greek food in Chicago's Greek Town! I am actually shooting a wedding on Saturday in Davenport, IA (which happens to be my old stomping ground) and thought I would fly into Chicago, grab some yumminess and then road-trip it with Jeff, one of my oldest, and most insane friends.

I will be taking full advantage of my new found mobile blogging skills and sending photos along the way.

This trip is kicking off my travel season as well. At the end of August I am photographing a wedding in Vienna Austria and then I am off to Jamaica for a wedding in September. As always, other trips to follow!

I will keep you all up to date with photos and such!

My Beasts

So, here is a quick photo of my three dogs. From left to right they
are Fargo, Gypsy, and Homer. They are all insane!
